There are plenty of phishing scams and hacking attempts from internet fraudsters and cyber criminals trying to gain access to Facebook accounts; but in this specific case there's no reality and the warning is totally baseless. 

According to Facebook, "this re-worded hoax message is currently circulating. The original, whose warning was "Visit New Facebook", began circulating about a year ago. Now, with the recent introduction of the Timeline, someone has changed the message to say "Visit New Timeline", but the claims in the message are still untrue." 

According to Snopes; this warning is nothing more than a hoax spread by well-meaning but credulous Facebook users: there have been no recorded instances of "Visit the new Facebook" come-ons containing malicious links of any kind (only warnings about them) and none of the major computer security/anti-virus software companies has reported users' actually encountering Facebook info-stealing malware that reached them in such fashion. 

Therefore, the simple advice is not to pass on such sensational alerts without confirmation to your Facebook friends. Some hoaxes malign companies and individuals. You don’t want to be responsible for damaging the reputation of an innocent party just by automatically posting a story to your wall. It is great to spread useful information and legitimate warnings to your friends – just do a little fact finding before clicking “share.” 

Facebook/Text Message Health Warning Reality: June 05 as Heaviest Sunny Day Causing Skin and Eye Diseases

I received a health warning text message on my cellphone yesterday (Monday, June 04) from one of my close friends, terming June 05 (Tuesday) as the ‘Heaviest Sunny Day on Earth’, which can cause skin and eye diseases. The same kind of messages are spreading also on Facebook and other social networks.

The message reads like below:

‘Save your family and yourself 5^th June 2012…the worldz heaviest sunny day on earth..please be careful with eyes and skin disease. Aware other and save lives. The Civil Defence has given notice that within the next few weeks temperature will go up to as high as 50 degree Celsius.

All employees who drive, whether company vehicle or company owned vehicles, are advised NOT to fill their gasoline tank to maximum. The high temperature can overheat your gasoline tank. This memo serves only as a reminder and precaution for everyone. Please take care and inform your friends and family.’

Many people have started receiving the text messages about so-called –heaviest sunny day and they kept on forwarding such messages without confirming the authenticity of the source.

The message is totally baseless in terms of warnings associated with the excessive hot temperature like skin, eye disease and overheating the gasoline tank.

After a thorough research and search it was found that such warnings, whether spreading through text messages or as Facebook posting, don’t bear any credibility and the same has been concluded by Director General Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Arif Mahmood.

He termed the assumption of Heaviest Sunny Day on June 5 (Tuesday) as a rumor and asked citizens not to fear of going outside their homes.

According to APP report quoting DG MET, “Assumption of June 5 as a Heaviest Sunny Day on Earth is not scientifically proved and it is not necessary that temperature rise on this specific day. Temperature can rise any day during the month of June, July and August”.

 

DG MET Arif Mehmood further told that there is no doubt about the present June days being the longest hot days of summer but a sudden rise in temperature reaching 50 degree Celsius can neither be calculated nor predicted.

The message claims that Facebook just released a “price grid" for membership, including $9.99 a month for Gold Member services, $6.99 for Silver Member services, and $3.99 for Bronze Member services. The message further claims that Facebook will continue to be free “IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT"

This tricky hoax has forced many users into “sharing", posting and re-posting, the message with their contacts and friends, just to save themselves from the charges between $3.99 and $9.99 a month.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant in Sophos – a well-known computer security firm, said in a blog post:

“It’s amazing what people will believe when they are sent a message from a trusted friend - but let me assure you, Facebook is *not* going to ask you for your payment when you sign onto the site tomorrow morning. And no, the announcement of Facebook beginning to charge its users has *not* been on the news."

The warning message penetrating through the masses on Facebook’s FarmVille Players asking to be careful about a possible virus threat linked with the opening of White Gift Box Tied up with Blue Lace. The message in question is like a re-born Facebook hoax that was earlier made inroads among Facebook users in 2010. 

FarmVille is certainly one of the more popular Facebook applications to spread across Facebook, produced by software company Zynga, the same company which has many other hits on its credit such as Mafia Wars. 

You can imagine the popularity of the FarmVille, as a Bulgarian Councillor was sacked in early 2010 because of his addiction to it. For those who has came across such ‘prayer request’ hoaxes in the past it is like a ‘Reborn Hoax’ with just change of the name and description of accident which caused to send the child into intensive care. The latest we share here about a 5-year-old boy DiegoMendez who claimed to be sustained severe head injuries due to a TV fell on him.

In fact it is the latest of a growing list of equally unverifiable messages circulating on social media website pleading people to change their statuses in support for a chain prayer.

Like before in such cases; in this specific incident there’s no such credible information available that the incident described in the message bears any kind of reality. Moreover, the message itself didn’t mention that where actually this accident happened and no further details about the hospital are given. This warning message is being circulating on internet via emails and social networks, including Facebook and Twitter, since beginning of August 2011.  The health warning message about dangerous black and white caterpillar, which can spread severe rashes and reactions, is actually a blend of facts and fiction. 

Let’s analyse the facts inherent in this health warning message:

Fact No. 1                   Existence: Actually the little creature do exist in the real world and is called ‘Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar’. The caterpillars, identified by their black and white furry exterior prefer hickories, walnuts, and related plants for food, but accept most any shrub or tree.

Fact No. 2                   Effects: The hairs of the Hickory Tussock caterpillar, which has black tufts on its back and black spikes, can cause an allergic reaction or rash for some people who make contact with the insect.

Fact No. 3                   Medically: Doctors say that the caterpillars are usually harmless. Children and others with a skin sensitivity/allergy to the caterpillar's hairs could develop an itchy rash.

Fiction No. 1               New Creature: The message states this little creature as ‘new to the area’; but actually it’s giving a wrong impression. According to famous entomologist Charlene Donahue; the caterpillars are being seen in abundance pretty much throughout the different states of US including, Maine, New York and Ohio. Experts say that the insects are fairly common, and there may be more of them than usual in the area this summer. The last large-population year was 2002, told further.

Fiction No. 2               POISONOUS: The message states this little creature as ‘PISONOUS’; but again it was tried to establish a wrong impression based on the fact that they might cause rashes and allergy in rare cases. However, according to officials at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Oriskany, the little critters, known as the White Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar, are not actually POISONOUS.

Fiction No. 3               Embeddable Hair: The warning message further states that the caterpillars leave their white hair on skin that can infuse poison to the whole body. Totally rubbish claim it is; as it is stated earlier that the caterpillar are not poisonous at all.

The black and white caterpillars look interesting, inviting people to pick them up. The problem is, they have a defense mechanism, and they could leave you with an itchy rash. The mastermind behind this warning message used the name of Medical research Authority of the US to authenticate this message and in the last it is requested to re-post and forward the same to your contacts and friends.

This is the reaction of the message being posted by face book users on their walls, and encouraging their friends and family to do the same, claiming that Facebook will start charging this summer.

According to the message, if you post it on your own Facebook wall then you will still be able to use the social network free of charge.

There's no link to any supporting evidence to the claim, and users would be right to treat it with extreme scepticism!

The reality is that Facebook has no plans to charge its users for accessing the site - indeed, it would be a very odd time for them to announce such a controversial move, just as its freely-available Google+ rival is launched.

My guess is that someone has started the chain letter as a piece of mischief - curious as to how many people they could fool into posting the message onto their Facebook pages.

It's not the first time, of course, that Facebook users have been hoaxed by such messages.
